People who believe “science” negates religion, with the implication being that religion is a phenomenon borne out of people being irrational and naively superstitious really grate on me. i mean, if you’re going to put yourself in opposition to religion, then it sort of follows that you should be able to produce a complete analysis of why organized religion exists, why people turn to it, where religious feelings come from - at least a much clearer analysis than simplistically reducing these feelings to ‘irrationality’. Believing that the development of science will abolish religion is plain smug superiority that often goes hand in hand with a poor understanding of science and historiography.
The people who create a dichotomy between religion and science are often the same ones who wholesale dismiss sociology, psychology, and cultural anthropology as valid and important fields of research. So they probably wouldn’t be able to explain anything about religion.
